A long sought after question was how the Galactic Empire turned so evil. The first three episodes of the Star Wars saga tries to give a picture of this. This has traditionally been analysed without highlighting the true hero of the story, Jar-jar Binks, without whom, the outcome would have been completely different. Here is what actually happened:
Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace
The story starts at jar jars home planet Naboo. It is under siege by the the Trade Federation. The two Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor) are sent there to negotiate by Chancellor Valorum.
However the trade federation is secretly working with the Siths (which are like Jedis but on the dark side of the force), lead by Lord Darth Sidious. The Sith Lord orders them to get rid of the Jedi and to attack Naboo. Under their command there is a huge army of heavily armed droids.
Beside the regular population of Naboo, there is another people, Gungans, living in a underwater city. After luckily escaping the trade federation, the two Jedi goes down to the surface of the planet and gets rescued by Jar-Jar Binks, the misunderstood expelled Gungan. He takes them to the Gungan underwater city, where they meet with the proud bout pretty helpless Gungans.
Meanwhile the Trade Federation captures Queen Abidale of Naboo, and the heroic Jar-Jar Binks takes the two jedi to the capital of Naboo (on the other side of the planet) in a submarine through the core. The party rescues Queen Amidala and her escort and sets of to Courscant, where there will seek help from the senate of the republic.
Unfortunately the ship is hit on the way out and although R2D2 manages to repair the ship, the hyperdrive is damaged. To find need parts, the ship lands on a desert planet Tatooine. Here Jar Jar helps them to find the young Anakin Skywalker who helps them with the repair. Qui-Gon senses a strong force in the young Anakin, and thinks he may be “the chosen one”, the future hope of the Jedis that will bring balance in the force. In the light of future events, this may be seen as a bit naïve by the Jedis, but Jar Jar of course knew that trouble was heading directly, even if the know-it-all jedis never listened.
Qui-Gon wagers the ship against Anakins freedom and the needed parts on Anakin in the “Boonta Eve Podrace”. Anakin overcomes all the opponents (including the evil rival Sebulba) in the dangerous race with a little cheating from using the force. This gives Anakin his freedom from his master Watto and he joins the Jedis. Just before leaving the Sith Darth Maul attacks them but Jar Jar Binks manage to get rid of him by sending Qui-Gon to battle him.
Back on Coruscant, Qui-Gon talks to the Jedi Council about the attack. They are worried that this may be the start of the return of the Sith. They also talks about Anakin.
